Here is an excerpt from Felix’s story as he and his mother try to escape Lemberg before the Russians arrive:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan we walk faster?\u201d Felix was so nervous, he hardly could breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we went any faster, we\u2019d be running,\u201d Mama replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen let\u2019s run. I\u2019m afraid, Mama. I wish Papa were here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She picked up speed. \u201cMe too. But I will protect you, and you will protect me, yes?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Felix shrugged. \u201cYou aren\u2019t strong like he is, and I\u2019m not brave like he is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am strong,\u201d Mama said. \u201cIn my own way. And you must learn to be brave, because the world will demand that of you now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Felix knew he had lost the argument, but that didn\u2019t mean he was wrong. He began to hurry even faster until finally he saw a lone automobile on the street ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s our driver,\u201d Mama said. \u201cRun on ahead. Ask the car to wait until I can get there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Felix hoisted his heavy bag even higher and began running. Mama wouldn\u2019t be far behind, but he worried that the driver had become impatient. He shouldn\u2019t have been. The bells had not yet rung eight o\u2019clock. They were early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet even before he reached the square, the automobile began to drive away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo!\u201d Felix dropped his bag and ran forward until he crossed directly in front of the automobile. \u201cWe\u2019re here. We\u2019re ready to leave!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The driver dimmed his lantern. \u201cGet out of my way or I\u2019ll run you over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy mother is Frau Baum. She paid you to get us out of Lemberg.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The driver laughed. \u201cSomeone else paid me more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he revved his motor and started forward, forcing Felix to step aside. He stared at the passengers\u2019 faces as they drove past, wondering who was sitting where he and his mother should have been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What were they supposed to do now? There was nothing, no good option. No option at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
